Assignment 5 – Photography is Simple

Take a series of 10 photographs of any subject exploring the theme ‘Photography is Simple’. Each photograph should be a unique view; in other words it should contain some new information, rather than repeat the information of the previous image.

I have come full circle. As the third lockdown starts over a year in which the world has gotten smaller and peoples thoughts have become closer to home I find myself back at the beginning, back at the square mile in which I live. If I look back at my photography in this course it has become more insular, more introspective and more personal. I am happy with my own company, looking at details in small things, taking time to explore and in doing so opening my eyes to things I would otherwise miss. I have walked 1000 miles in 2020 and most have been in my ‘square mile’ so it seems only right to return to it here.

What do you define as simple in this context? I have tried to make simplicity echo throughout this assignment, simplicity in composition & simplicity in look. I hope they are instantly relatable to a viewer, there is no hidden meaning for you to interpret unless you want to. Scratch below the surface and you can assign a rationale to the alternating dark and light images – is it a repetition of endless days and nights in an arms length world? Alternating feelings or moods – how are you today? The crop and treatment was inspired by the beautiful moments in Miho Kajioka and Masao Yamamoto’s work. I wanted my images to use that same sense of a sliver of time and felt the crop worked beautifully – these aren’t big vistas to explore, it’s me sharing with you these little tiny elements I have seen and captured. Each image is a step on my journey both over the last year in photography and a literal step on my daily walks and hopefully as a whole you get a sense of that journey through this incredibly strange year and appreciate as I have that these little things matter.

The following video is a summary of the assignment and my final process of printing and display.

  1. Quite an impressive assignment. I really love the way you have captured the look and feel of these images. Love the crop and the resulting finale. Fairly simple shots, but so magnificently cropped, finished, and presented, capturing a sense of great nostalgia reminiscent to me of your journey through the course. So beautifully – 2/4/7 & 10 being my absolute favorites. I think the sliver of time that you have tried to capture comes across superbly. Just love it. Congratulations Lee on an assignment really well done. I think one of my greatest joys being at the OCA has been the unique ideas and interpretation that everyone interprets assignment briefs with and it has been one of pure joy following your work. congratulations on finishing the EYV and wishing you a spectacular journey forward.
